Preventive Dentistry

The goal of preventive dentistry is to take steps now that protect your oral health from problems in the future. We have seen how a patient’s confidence and entire outlook can change when we reveal their new, healthy smile. We would love for all our patients to experience that feeling.

Preventive dentistry includes essential services like teeth cleanings and dental exams at our Eugene, OR dental office every six months. When you do your part at home with conscientious brushing and flossing, you are on your way to your healthiest smile.

Routine Dental Exams

The American Dental Association recommends that you see a dentist twice a year for a preventive exam and cleaning. If you are a new patient, these visits give us a starting point for future exams; if you are a current patient, they will help us detect changes since we last saw you.

Dr. Susie and Dr. Tyler perform comprehensive dental examinations including an oral cancer screening at each checkup.  Finding and treating gum disease, cavities, or any other concerns at their earliest possible stage gives our patients the best treatment outcomes.

Professional Teeth Cleanings

Teeth cleanings aren’t meant to be a substitute for practicing excellent daily oral care at home. You do your part by brushing twice a day and flossing once, and dental cleanings allow your hygienist to remove plaque and tartar that your toothbrush can’t.

We also want to make sure that your at-home oral hygiene efforts are effective, so we will be happy to demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques. You should also feel free to ask your hygienist about any oral health concerns you have.

Diet and nutrition also play an important role in maintaining oral health, and if you have questions, we are always happy to provide counseling in these areas.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride occurs naturally in many foods and our water supply, which is essential for building healthy teeth. If our dentists in Eugene, OR determine that the amount of fluoride you or your child receives isn’t sufficient for your needs, they may recommend an application of supplemental fluoride to protect your smile.

A Healthy Smile Contributes to Better Overall Health

In the last few years, we’ve seen increasing evidence of the strong connection between your oral health and your general health and well-being. Periodontal (gum) disease has been linked to numerous serious health conditions, including:

  • Heart disease
  • Lung disease
  • Diabetes
  • Dementia
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer

This is only a partial listing, and every day it seems we learn about another way chronic gum disease impacts your general health and well-being. Preventive dentistry is the key to a healthy smile, and we offer the services you need at our Eugene, OR dental office to achieve it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expecting moms have many questions about dental work during pregnancy, and the answer is that it’s not just safe—it’s a good idea to protect them and their unborn baby.

Our Eugene, OR dentists highly recommend maintaining your preventive dental exams and teeth cleanings to avoid developing gum disease.

While we might not recommend dental x-rays during pregnancy, it’s good to know that the American College of Radiology states that a single diagnostic x-ray doesn’t have sufficient radiation to cause adverse effects to your unborn baby.

We recommend postponing cosmetic and elective procedures until after delivery. But if you do need a tooth filling or dental crown during pregnancy, it has been well studied and is considered safe for mom and baby.

Have Questions about Dental Work during Pregnancy?

It is safe to receive dental care while pregnant, but we always welcome calls and questions regarding this concern. Please call us if you have questions or need to schedule a teeth cleaning at our Eugene, OR dental office.
